VERNER PANTON (1926-1998) was a master of the fluid, futuristic style of 1960s design which introduced the Pop aesthetic to furniture and interiors. Born in Denmark, he made his name there before settling in Switzerland in the 1960s.

During the ‘Beat’ years of the mid-1950s, young European artists and writers bought battered old camper vans to travel across the continent. One of the oddest-looking of these vans was the Volkswagen belonging to Verner Panton, a young Danish architect, who had customised it into a mobile studio.

Every few months, Panton set off from Copenhagen in the Volkswagen for a trek across Europe dropping in on fellow designers as well as any manufacturers or distributors which he hoped would buy his work. Famed like the rest of Scandinavia for its organic modernist designs, Denmark was then at the centre of the contemporary design scene. Yet Verner Panton’s style could not have been more different from the soft, naturalistic forms and materials which were the hallmarks of Danish modernism. He knew that he would have to look further afield to win acceptance for his work.

Panton had close links with many of the most important Danish designers of that era. Pøul Henningsen, the lighting designer, had taught him at Copenhagen’s Royal Academy of Art. After graduating, he had worked for Denmark’s architectural grandee, Arne Jacobsen. Panton also enjoyed a close friendship with designer-craftsman, Hans Wegner. But whereas Wegner was famed for his skill at modernising classic Danish teak chairs, Panton’s passion lay in experiments with plastics and other rapidly advancing man-made materials to create vibrant colours in the geometric forms of Pop Art.

Nothing in Verner Panton’s childhood suggested that he might become a designer. Born in 1926 to innkeeper parents in Gantofte, a tiny village on the island of Fünen, he longed to become a artist, but showed little talent for painting or drawing. Despite this, he won a place at the technical college in Odense, the largest town on the island, in 1944. Denmark was then occupied by the Germans and Panton joined the resistance. Towards the end of World War II, he spent several months in hiding after a cache of weapons was found in his room. After completing his studies in Odense, Panton moved to Copenhagen in 1947 to enrol as an architecture student.

Biography

1963 Moves to Basel (after a short stint in Cannes) with Marianne Person-Oertenheim. Begins collaboration with Herman Miller-Vitra in Basel.

1964 Flying Chairs and Shell Lamps create a furore at Cologne Furniture Fair.

1965 Unveils S Chair, first cantilevered moulded plywood chair, for Thonet. Starts work on the Panton Chair with Herman Miller-Vitra launched in 1968.

1969 Living Towers unveiled in Paris. Spiegel headquarters completed.

1970 Designs fantastical Visiona II exhibition for Bayer at Cologne Fair.

1973 Completes work on the interior of Grüner & Jahr’s offices in Hamburg.

1990 Vitra puts the Panton Chair back into production.

1994 IKEA produces Panton’s Vilbert Chair as the Panton revival takes off.

1995 Panton Chair appears on the cover of British Vogue.

1998 Verner Panton dies in Copenhagen 12 days before the opening of his Light and Colour retrospective at the Trapholtmuseum in Kolding, Denmark.

2000 Verner Panton: Light and Colour opens at Vitra Design Museum, Weil-am-Rhein, and the Design Museum.

Edith Head (1897-1981)

In 1924, (whilst lack of art design or costume design experience), She was hired as a costume sketch artist at Paramount Pictures in the costume department. She than later admitted that she had borrowed another student's sketches for her job interview. Edith was famously known for her Straight-cut bangs, dark glasses and tailored suits as her trademark which made her more famous than the major stars who shone in the industry.

In her six decades of costume design, she worked on 1131 motion pictures, recieved 35 Academy Award nominations and won 8 Oscars. In addition to her film/costume work, she designed Vogue sewing patterns, staged Hollywood fashion shows, wrote many magazine and newspaper columns, wrote 2 books (The Dress Doctor and How to Dress For Success).

She started off Designing costumes for Silent Films, such as 'The Wanderer' (1925). She worked at Paramount for 44 years until she went to Universal pictures in 1967.

During her Paramount Years she was nominated for 35 academy awards every year and won eight times. Her costumes were being worn by the most glamorous and famous actresses in films. In the 1950's she began appearing on Art Linkletter's tv show, and writin

g books on fashion.

The "sarong" dress that was designed for Dorothy Lamour in 'the Hurricane' made her well known.

During her universal Years, she designed a woman's uniform for the Untied States Coast Guard,designed costumes for a mini TV series based on the novel Little Women.

Bio:

Tom Dixon’s love of motorbikes directed his path into the world of furniture design. A couple of serious bike accidents had forced him to drop out of art school and then discontinue as a musician, (bass guitar for a disco band). His unrelenting interest in motorbikes required him to learn the skill of welding, which he learnt from a friend in one quick lesson.

"I was immediately hooked on welding...mesmerised by the tiny pool of molten metal, viewed from the safety of darkened goggles. Allowing an instant fusion of one piece of steel to another. It had none of the seriousness of craft and none of the pomposity of design: it was industry.

It suited my impatience perfectly...giving me the opportunity to build, destroy, adjust and remake structures instantly.”

At the time London was full of scrap metal yards, due to the eighties boom, giving a ready availability of material waiting to be transformed.

Tom’s reputation grew and caught the attention of Italian furniture design company, Cappellini, whose support provided the manufacturing capability and vision of Dixon, and several other burgeoning designers.

The "S" chair made Tom Dixon's name, evolving from early prototypes in his Creative Salvage days. It was initially woven with recycled rubber inner tubes, and then covered in rush, a material traditionally used for drop in seats. Cappellini were attracted by its sculptural form and amazing legless structure of bent steel frame. Launched by Cappellini with a vibrant felt upholstered covering in 1989, the "S" chair quickly reached iconic like status and now has a permanent place in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Colleen Atwood (born 1950) is an Academy Award-winning American costume designer.

Colleen has been nominated for an Academy Award numerous times and won Academy Awards for the movies Chicago in 2002 and Memoirs of a Geisha in 2006. Colleen has collaborated several times with directors Tim Burton and Jonathan Demme. Beginning her career as a fashion advisor in Washington State in the early 1970s, Colleen eventually ventured into the world of costume design for theater and film, initially coming to fame through her work on Sting's Bring on the Night World Tour. Jacqueline Durran has worked in the costume department of an impressively diverse range of films: from Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake, to Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and, Jo Wright adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice, and most recently Atonement, both starring Keira Knightley. She has gained herself a broad selection of awards for her costume designs.

How did you become a costume designer?

At the age of 20, after studying philosophy, I realised that costume designing existed as a job! I thought it would be wonderful to work alongside actors and directors in the theatre or on film sets. I found some work in a costume hire house, where I got to know designers who came in to get inspiration for their work. I then became an assistant in the wardrobe departments of the Mike Leigh film, Topsy-Turvy and James Bond, Die Another Day.

What's the design process on a major feature?
It’s different on every feature, but what usually happens is you’re interviewed for the position when the film is still in the planning stage. If you’re given the job, you have a preparation period in which you go away, do your research and begin making clothes. On Pride And Prejudice this period was only nine weeks. During this time, I had an assistant working for me, who’d go out and buy fabrics and materials for me to look at. You always hope that casting will happen as soon as possible, so that you can start taking measurements and making costumes with an actor in mind. The department draws up a ‘costume plot’ – detailing exactly how many different changes of clothes each character will need. You’ll then look at the director’s order of filming, and begin to make the costumes in the order that they will be needed. As well as an assistant, there’ll also be a person who does the fittings and takes care of the physical wardrobe, and, as was the case on Pride And Prejudice, a person who’s job it is to make the clothes look older than they really are!

Various productions of Pride And Prejudice have come and gone over the years. How did you make sure that the costumes in this new version stood out?
The first thing I did was ban myself from watching any previous adaptations. I knew it would be too difficult not to be influenced and I wanted to produce as fresh a look as possible. Secondly, most film versions of the book were set in and around 1815. The director decided that this version would be set in 1796/7, so we were talking about a different era of fashion. I took inspiration from original references – paintings of the period and surviving costumes.

The styles worn by actors in films often influence real life fashion. Could that be the case with Pride And Prejudice?
It will, as it has done on so many previous occasions. In the 1960s, Doctor Zhivago inspired the Russian peasant look. I’ve already been interviewed by an American magazine, whose editor believes that the film will inspire the Empire line. That’s not to say that Pride And Prejudice will start this trend or that it will become a dominant look in mainstream fashion; it may well just tap into an idea that’s already around and be adopted by the fringes. When I’m designing costumes for a film, I’m not in a bubble; I’m influenced by everything around me. The costumes in Pride And Prejudice reflect, to some extent, what’s going on in the world of fashion at the moment, and by the same token, could well influence new looks.

Patrick Demarchelier was born near Paris in 1943 to a modest family. For his seventeenth birthday, his stepfather bought him his first Kodak camera. He quickly became a natural behind the camera. Then he learned how to develop film, retouch negatives, began shooting friends and weddings…

Kareem Iliya

Kareem Iliya was born in Lebanon in 1967 and studied fashion design in Texas and New York. He works with watercolours and ink to create those beautiful illustrations. His playing with contrasts and the colour gradient in his work are stunning!

Kareem Iliya started his fashion career working with Giorgio Armani, and from 1992 also freelanced as an illustrator. His images are hauntingly full of grace and mystery.

In addition to being an illustrator, Kareem Iliya is also a menswear designer.

Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel (19 August 1883 – 10 January 1971) was a pioneering French fashion designer whose modernist philosophy, menswear-inspired fashions, and pursuit of expensive simplicity made her an important figure in 20th-century fashion.

The young Chanel spent seven years in the orphanage of the Roman Catholic monastery of Aubazine, where she learned the trade of a seamstress. When Coco turned eighteen, she left the orphanage, and took up work for a local tailor.

While working at a tailoring shop Chanel began designing hats as a hobby, which soon became a deeper interest of hers. Her hats were worn by celebrated French actresses, which helped to establish her reputation. In 1913, Chanel introduced women’s sportswear at her new boutique in Deauville. More women during the World War I era came to accept her view that women were supposed to dress for themselves and not their men.

Alannah Hill (born 1963) is an Australian fashion designer, well known in Australia and internationally for her "girly chic" fashion label and boutique chain.
Hill was born in Tasmania, but spent much of her childhood in the coastal town of Penguin, where her parents owned a milk bar. She moved to Hobart at 15, running away to join Ashton's Circus, and at the age of 17, moved to Melbourne, Victoria.
Hill worked in Melbourne as a stylist on film and video clips, eventually landing a small role in the 1987 film Dogs in Space starring Michael Hutchence. Whilst waitressing in a cafe, she was offered a job at a fashion store (Indigo) in Chapel Street, South Yarra, where she worked for fifteen years, before starting her own fashion design label in 1996.
She opened her first boutique in 1997, and has thrived on a niche for fashioning feminine fabrics (floral georgettes, glossy satins and sugary satins) and melodramatic morsels of frippery (decadent beading, oversized floral corsages) into sugary sweet confections that have spawned a cult following here and overseas.

Today Alannah heads her own booming and lucrative empire, the idiosyncratic and intensely feminine Alannah Hill label. With nine opulent and enticing boutiques throughout Australia and sequins galore, her rise and rise is a success story of the old Hollywood variety.
She is a testament to what tenacity, natural talent and a glamorous dream can do for a girl.

MIRANDA: Costume Designer Kermit Love

Kermit Love

Kermit Love was one of the few who revolutionised the craft of not just simply connecting the costume with the character but by making the costumes an extension of the emotional undercurrents, mood, and mindset of each production.

Over his 70 plus year career, Love collaborated with heavyweights including Twyla Tharp, Cecil B DeMille, George Blanchine and on a more memoriable note Jim Henson.

Kermit Love was born in 1916 and began his career in the 1930s, as a puppeteer for the Federal Works Progress Administration and as a costume designer for Orsen Welles’ Mercury Theater, then moved into Hollywood projects and teamed up with costume designer Barbara Karinska, with whom he devised the costumes for Agnes de Mille's ballet Rodeo.

Love subsequently met and collaborated with Jerome Robbins, creating the apparel for the stage musical Fancy Free, and New York City Ballet maestro Balanchine, he designed the costumes for productions including Don Quixote, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges, Firebird Wings, and Adagio Lamentoso.

Love's relationship with Jim Henson, however, was one of the most productive and brought some of his most widely seen creations. The two became acquainted through the Judson Theater, and shortly thereafter, Henson recruited Love to design some of the iconic Sesame Street characters in the late '60s, including Big Bird, Mr. Snuffleupagus, and Cookie Monster.

It was Love's idea, in fact, to make Big Bird a full-body puppet, a concept reportedly inspired by his perception of the tall and loping Henson.

He remained with the program for decades and also appeared on-camera from time to time as Willy the Hot Dog Vendor, reprising that role in the 1985 Sesame Street big-screen movie ‘Sesame Street Presents: Follow The Bird’.

After a long illness, Love died of congestive heart failure in his home of Poughkeepsie, NY, in June 2008. He was 91.

Henri Matisse

Previously known as a bold colorist, the bleached colors of the French Riviera had muted Matisse's palette. In 1920 Matisse designed the costumes for the Russian ballet "The Song of the Nightingale". The audience expected a lavish spectacular, instead they got elegant simplicity and monochromatic color.

The overall scheme for his costume designs was restrained. He used black, white and yellow for dramatic emphasis. These costumes were made of paper and created in multiples. When worn en masse, they became part of a fluctuating pattern of shape and color. Matisse simplified the elements of line and decoration, reducing them to their essence.

These costumes related to each other and to their backdrops. Matisse deliberately masked the contours of the dancers' bodies beneath their large, voluminous rectangular costumes, painted in bold, slightly oriental patterns. When they moved, the dancers transformed into stylized patterns of shape and color.

The most dramatic of these costumes were made for a group of mourners who wore hooded coats of felt appliqued with midnight-blue velvet. They appear as abstract forms, yet powerfully symbolize the rituals of death and mourning.

The yellow satin for the costumes for the Mandarin were appliqued with large gold and black discs. When seen from a distance, the dancers looked like a field of yellow sprinkled with flowers.

arkings of the Chinese deer, an animal that represents longevity in Chinese mythology.

Matisse gave the audience of "The Song of the Nightingale" something unexpected and memorable in 1920. His simplicity of design created bold, graphic images.

Léon Samoilovitch Bakst was a Russian Painter and costume designer who revolutionized the arts he worked in. Born as Lev (Leib) Rosenberg, he was also known as Leon (Lev) Nikolayevich Bakst (seudonym derived from his grandmother's family name, Bakster (Baxter)

Bakst attended the Imperial Academy of Arts at St. Petersburg but was expelled after painting a too-realistic “Pietà.” He returned to Russia after completing his studies in Paris and became a court painter.

Bakst began to design scenery in 1900, first at the Hermitage court theatre and then at the imperial theatres. In 1906 he went to Paris, where he began designing stage sets and costumes for Diaghilev’s newly formed ballet company, the Ballets Russes.

The first Diaghilev ballet for which he designed decor was Cléopâtre (1909), and he was chief set designer thereafter, working on the balletsScheherazade and Carnaval (both 1910), Le Spectre de la rose and Narcisse (both 1911), L’Après-midi d’un faune andDaphnis et Chloé (both 1912), and Les Papillons (1914).

The Ball Chair

The Ball Chair - or Globe Chair as it's called sometimes - was designed by using one of the most simple geometric forms - the ball. Cutting of a part and fixing it at one point Eero Aarnio comes to a remarkable result - a completely unconventional shaped chair:

A Ball Chair is a "room within a room" with a cozy and calm athmosphere, protecting outside noises and giving a private space for relaxing or having a phonecall. Turning around its own axis on the base the view to the outer space is variable for the user and thus he is not completely excluded from world outside.

"The idea of the chair was very obvious. We had moved to our first home and I had started my free-lance career in 1962.

We had a home but no proper big chair, so I decided to make one, but some way a really new one.

After some drawing I noticed that the shape of the chair had become so simple that it was merely a ball. I pinned the full scale drawing on the wall and ‚sat' in the chair to see how my head would move when sitting inside it. Being the taller one of us I ‚sat' in the chair and my wife drew the course of my head on the wall. This is how I determined the height of the chair. Since I aimed at a ball shape, the other lines were easy to draw, just remembering that the chair would have to fit through a doorway.

After this I made the first prototype myself using an inside mould, which has been made using the same principle as a glider fuselage or wing. I covered the plywood body mould with wet paper and laminated the surface with fiberglass, rubbed down the outside, removed the mould from inside, had it upholstered and added the leg. In the end I installed the red telephone on the inside wall of the chair. The naming part of the chair was easy, the BALL CHAIR was born."-Aarnio

Catherine Martin attended North Sydney Girls High School followed by completing a diploma at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. During her time at the institute (haha) she developed a strong professional relationship with Baz Luhrmann which later turned into a romantic relationship and soon into a marriage.

This relationship gave Martin ample opportunity to get her designs out there in the public eye. Working alongside Luhrmann boosted both careers to superstar levels. In 1993 Martin and Luhrmann both made their feature debut with the production and design of the film Strictly Ballroom. For Martins Costume design and Production Design she won two Australian Film Institute Awards. She received an oscar nomination for her work on Baz Luhrmann film "William Shakespeare's : Romeo & Juliet" (1993) but it wasn't until she worked on the movie "Moulin Rouge!" (2001) that she was excelled into her superstar level. For her work she received a total of 9 awards in all various categories for film costume design, production design and art direction. Since Martin's professional and personal life has been flourishing.

She has most recently worked on the set of Baz Luhrmanns film "Australia".

Cassandra Rhodin

Cassandra Rhodin is a Swedish artist and is very hard to find information about on the internet, though I really liked her illustrations and wanted to show you guys.

She draws her heavily lined ladies with overly long limbs, who look powerful and pretty. Cassandra uses ink and watercolour in her drawings as well which I really like.

Cassandra’s illustrations are ultra stylish which makes them perfect for fashion campaigns. She also designs graphic tees and has worked with a few with clients like H&M, Nylon, Urban Outfitters and ELLE, she also has a kids fashion line called Mini Rodini.

Her enigmatic black-and-white drawings and watercolour illustrations seem to have a 1920’s influence with a twist of gloom; they also seem to give a black and white movie vibe.

Cassandra Rhodin’s work is very distinctive and moody, and there is a very nice commercial quality to her work.

Acclaimed Fashion and Portrait Photographer. Although he spent most of his 60-year career with the glamor magazines Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, his most distinctive work can be found in his no-frills, black-and-white celebrity portraits. Among Avedon's most famous images: a supine Nastassia Kinski wearing only a python; a close-up of painter Andy Warhol's bullet-scarred torso; a Chanel-clad model cavorting with a pair of live elephants. Avedon’s fashion photographs are characterized by a strong black-and-white contrast that creates an effect of austere sophistication. In his portraits of celebrities and other sitters, he created a sense of drama by often using a stark, white background and eliciting a frontal, confrontational pose.
Of his art Avedon once said, "All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth." A major retrospective of Avedon's photographs was held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2002. He died at 81, after suffering a stroke.

Helmut Newton

Born in Berlin, Helmut Newton owned his first camera at the age of 12. After leaving Berlin and working/travelling around the world he settled in Australia, becoming an Australian citizen in 1945. His growing reputation as a fashion photographer was rewarded when he secured a commission to illustrate fashions in Australian Vogue magazine in 1956. This won him a 12 month contract with Vogue in London. Newton left this before the contract was completed to work for magazines in France and Germany. He returned to Melbourne in 1959 for a contract with Australian vogue.

Settling in Paris in 1961, Newton worked as a photographer for Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. He established a particular style marked by erotic, stylized scenes, often with sado-masochistic and fetishistic subtexts.

Newton's work is rooted in fashion photography; creating an image of society and the role that women play in it, aiming to sell what it depicts, using the powers of seduction to do so. Newton was at home with this tradition. He created a vision in each of his photographs based on constantly recurring themes; women who take the lead, women who love and desire whomever they want, whenever they like, women full of health a vigour. The women of Newton's world are women who get what they want, and they are far removed from the weak, compliant sex-objects dominated by the misogynist macho. This is the reason his art has been found to be so shocking. A fashion photograph can be a nude, and visa versa, and a nude can also be a portrait. Newton enjoys this interplay of genres, dressing and undressing subjects in each scene, confusing the boundaries and rules of fashion photography, making his images memorable and influential to the work of many a photographer to this day.

With a career spanning 5 decades, Newton has become regarded as one of the world's leading photographers. He continues to to have a major influence on modern photography and visual art.

Tobie Giddio

Tobie Giddio stared out in fashion illustration, studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Being taught the principles of fine art at the same time, Giddio learnt about figure drawing, how to abstract the figure and about colour and modern art. She was able to apply all these principles to her work.

Giddio began her career, after completing her studies in 1986, as a fashion illustrator with Bergdorf Goodman for their weekly New York Times advertisement. Her art was meant to bring old world fashion into the present with a modern hand.
Giddio began the 1990's with the intention to further refine and simplify the classic fashion drawing she had initiated in the 80's. This process of simplification created a natural progression towards deconstruction and abstraction.

Her work id drawn mostly from memory. Being Created with Sumi ink, watercolours and Pantone film makes Her illustrations very organic and intuitive, evolving with each new season.Her work is very abstract, utilizing overlapping colour blocks, ink blots and sharp lines to create a recognisable silhouette.

Giddio has produced art for Tiffany and co.,Harper's Bazaar, Cartier, Apple, Swarovski and Alexander Mcqueen.

Known for his love of rhinestones and sequins, Mackie is perhaps best known for dressing Cher. In the mid-60s he was designing costumes for many of the top television variety specials, with stars such as, Fred Astaire, Mitzi Gaynor, Dinah Shore and Diana Ross & The Supremes.

From 1967 he had an 11-year stint with the Carol Burnett Show, from which came the request by Cher to create her costumes for the upcoming Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. (b Stuttgart, 4 Sept 1888; d Baden-Baden, 13 April 1943).

German painter, sculptor, choreographer and stage designer. After the death of his parents he lived with his sister at Göppingen, and in Stuttgart from 1903 to 1905 he served an apprenticeship at a workshop specializing in marquetry while attending classes at the Kunstgewerbeschule. He continued his studies on a bursary from 1906 to 1911 at the Kunstakademie in Stuttgart under the plein-air landscape painters Christian Landenberger (1862–1927) and Friedrich von Keller (1840–1914). In 1911–12 he lived in Berlin, where he produced paintings such as Hunting Lodge, Grunewald (1911; Stuttgart, Staatsgal.) and Self-portrait (1912; Stuttgart, Staatsgal.) under the influence of Cubism. After returning to Stuttgart, Schlemmer studied under Adolf Hölzel, whose theory of pictorial methods made him a pioneer of abstract art and who gathered around him an international circle of students that included Willi Baumeister and the Swiss artists Otto Meyer-Amden and Johannes Itten, with whom Schlemmer became friends.

The Bauhaus years

In 1919 Schlemmer turned to the art of sculpture and had an exhibit of his work at the Gallery Der Sturm in Berlin. After his marriage to Helena Tutein in 1920, Schlemmer was invited to Weimar by Walter Gropius to run the mural-painting and sculpture departments at the Bauhaus School before heading up the theater workshop in 1923. His complex ideas were influential, making him one of the most important teachers working at the school at that time. However, with the rise of the Nazis at the end of the 1920s, Schlemmer's work was seen as degenerate and he was dismissed from his post in 1929.

Schlemmer became internationally known with the première of his 'Triadisches Ballett' in Stuttgart in 1922. His work for the Bauhaus and his preoccupation with the theatre are an important factor in his work, which deals mainly with the problematic of the figure in space. People, typically a stylised female figure, continued to be the predominant subject in his painting. After using Cubism as a springboard for his structural studies, Schlemmer's work became intrigued with the possibilities of figures and their relationship to the space around them, for example 'Egocentric Space Lines' (1924). Schlemmer's characteristic forms can be seen in his sculptures as well as his paintings. Yet he also turned his attention to stage design, first getting involved with this in 1929, executing settings for the opera 'Nightingale' and the ballet 'Renard' by Igor Stravinsky.

The 1930s were difficult years for Schlemmer and his family. In 1933 he was dismissed from his teaching position at Breslau by the Nazis, who considered his art degenerate. The Schlemmers then moved to Eichberg near the Swiss border. Unable to show or sell his work, Schlemmer's painting took on a decidedly mystical tone. The former balance that Schlemmer achieved between the rounded conical forms of his figures and their placement on a two-dimensional surface gave way to very flat, almost transparent, figures bathed in a mystical light. In 1937 Schlemmer moved to Sehringen before his pictures were displayed at the National Socialist exhibition of "Degenerate Art."

Schlemmer's last years were spent working at a paint factory owned by Kurt Herbert in Wuppertal. The factory offered Schlemmer the opportunity to paint without the fear of persecution. His last series, the so called "Window Pictures," were very small pictures painted while looking out the window of his house and observing neighbors engaged in their domestic tasks.

During the summer of 1942 Schlemmer fell ill. After clinical treatments at numerous hospitals Oskar Schlemmer died in Baden-Baden in April 1943.

Lizzy Gardiner made a splash at the 1994 Academy Awards by accepting her Oscar for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in a dress made out of 254 Gold Amex cards

"I was really happy during my wild, free childhood in Dubbo. I was a tomboy but at the same time I had an obsession with my mother’s shoes and clothes. For years, my two brothers and I had a gay nanny who would pick us up from school in a dress (he’d call it a caftan), turban and jewellery. I guess he was the one who instigated the dressing up and putting on shows."

At 12, Lizzy went to Pymble Ladies College in Sydney and fell down a well of despair and depression. Social situations are still difficult. At about 15, she started to stalk a woman called Donatella at the Italian consulate and desperately wanted to study fashion in Italy. Eventually Donatella cracked, and straight after the HSC she went to Florence to study fashion at the Academy of Italian Arts. After graduating she was due to work for Gianfranco Ferre but had an allergy to the pollution and came home to Australia

Old friend, Stephan Elliott wanted Lizzy and her creative partner Tim Chappel because he had seen their work on the TV show E Street, and they knew how to make a modest wardrobe budget. The movie was of course The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The costumes were huge, colourful, flamboyant and outrageous reflecting both the flamboyance of the drag queen characters and showbiz and also each costume had an Australian element like the huge thongs or the essence of an Australian animal like the emu or frilly neck lizard.

When Tim Chappel (creative partner) and Lizzy were in LA for the awards, we were courted by the big designers to wear their outfits and she was just bored with the whole thing. At the last minute she decided to wear the Amex dress. She created something of a stir when she showed up at the 1995 Awards Ceremony wearing a dress of her own design -- made entirely of American Express Gold cards -- and originally conceived for PRISCILLA, but shelved when American Express passed on the idea. However they relented when she later told them that she would wear the outfit to the ceremony. They were generous enough to supply 300 AmEx cards (according to Gardner she used 254) all with her name printed on them and all one number short as to make them all invalid. The famous dress was auctioned off in March of 1999 for $12,650. The proceeds went to the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

She had began in Australian television as a wardrobe assistant for "Jilted" (1987). She also supervised the wardrobe for the feature film WEEKEND WITH KATE (1990). THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT was her first film as costume designer. Other design credits include BOUND (1996), WELCOME TO WOOP WOOP and GONE FISHIN' (both 1997), WOUNDINGS (1998), EYE OF THE BEHOLDER and THEORY OF THE TROJANS (both 1999), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II (2000), 6 episodes of "Effie: Just Quietly" (2001, TV series), STEALTH and THE GREAT RAID (both 2005), GHOST RIDER (2007), and CHAD CHUCKER (2008).

Lizzy had to be talked into doing the stage show of Priscilla. "It meant exiting the film industry for a long time but it ended up being the best decision I’ve made. It was difficult trying to live up to my reputation and the number of costumes was enormous, but I’ve grown creatively."

Todd Thomas is a New York-based designer, born in 1961 in Murphysboro, Illinois, Thomas grew up in a rural environment where his family's creative resourcefulness as a consequence of necessity made a big impression on him.

With Thomas's technical skills he went to work in the moderate world of Seventh Avenue manufacturer-designers, soaking up every aspect of sample making, cutting, pattern making, sourcing and production. The technical side of his craft, essential in his work and moneymaking endeavors, was indelibly strengthened there.

Among his favorite freelance design jobs have been costume designs for films, including Rebecca Miller’s Angela (1995) and Cindy Sherman’s Office Killer (1997), which he found hugely rewarding. Some of his more recent collaborative work includes costume designs for highly televised fashion shows such as Victoria Secret.

Early life and education

Taymor was born in newton,massachusetts, daughter of Elizabeth , a political teacher, and Melvin Lester Taymor, a gynecologist.Taymor's interest in theatre took root early in her life. At the age of seven, she was already drawing her sister into stagings of children's stories for her parents. By the age of nine, she became entranced with the Boston Children's Theatre and became involved with them. In high school, she became interested in international travel, and made trips to both Sri Lanka and India with the Experiment in International living. Being the youngest member of theatre groups became common, as she joined Julie Portman's Theatre Workshop of Boston at the age of 15. Yearning for a more in depth approach to her work, Taymor went to Paris to study with L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. During her studies there, she became exposed to mime which helped in the development of her physical sensibilities.

Career

After her college years, Taymor used a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study pre-Bunraku puppetry on the island of Awaji, Japan in order to learn more about experimental theatre, puppetry, and visually oriented theatre. Taymor's greatest acclaim as a director for the stage has come from the popular musical The Lion King, a 1997 adaptation of the animated film of that name. Taymor received two Tony Awards for her work on The Lion King, one for direction and one for costume design, making her the first woman to receive a Tony Award for directing a musical.

Taymor has also worked in film in recent years, directing the films Titus in 1999 (an adaptation of the play Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare) and Frida in 2002 (a movie based on the life of artist Frida Kahlo). Both movies received positive reviews for their stylish filming; Frida was the more acclaimed of the two, garnering six Academy Award nominations and winning in two of the six categories (Best Makeup and Best Original Score). Taymor and Goldenthal were co-nominees in the Best Original Song category.

For the Metropolitan Opera during the 2005/2006 season, Taymor directed a successful production of The Magic Flute. It was revised for the 2006/2007 season and, in addition to full-length performances, was adapted for a 100-minute version over the Holiday season to appeal to children. That version of the opera was the first of a series of NCM Fathom Live on the Big Screen presentations of MET operas downloaded via satellite to movie theatres across North America and parts of Europe for the 2006/2007 season.

In June 2006, Taymor directed the opera Grendel for Los Angeles Opera which was also presented as part of the Summer 2006 Lincoln Center Festival in New York City. Taymor's most recent work has been as director of the film Across the Universe, a 1960s love story set to the music of The Beatles, and starring Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood. The film opened in September 2007 and received a Grammy Nomination for Best Comedy/Musical in 2008.

In April 2007, it was announced that Marvel Studios was preparing to make a Spider-Man musical adaptation for the stage. Taymor has been selected to direct the show, and co-write the book with music to be composed and written by Bono andThe Edge. The musical, titled Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark is scheduled for Broadway at the Hilton Theatre in February 2010.^[2]

As of September 2008, Taymor is directing a film version of William Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Catherine Martin designed set and costumes for the movie moulin rouge trying to escapsulate what on the set we termed a world of entertainment underneath women's dresses was very difficult in a PG13 movie on december 18th in one of Morgans hotel rooms she told reporters because the girls had to kick so fast and so high their underwear needed to be non restrictive for movement it basically consisted of two flaps of fabric on each thigh tied with string around the waist when the original moulin rouge dancers kicked the audience really got a eyeful this is why moulin rouge is so infamous

work costume design was influenced and driven by his painting are to have "revolutionised the roles of sets and designs". Growing up as a middle class jewish child in Russia he graduated from gymasium and went on to study at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts whilst working part time as an book illustrator. In his first exhibition he derived the name Bakst from his Grandmothers last name Baxter 1889. In the early 90s he based his exhibitions on works with Society of watercolours.

Between 1893 - 1897 he lived in Paris and continued further studies at Académie Julian soon enough becoming a member of the artists and writers circle which later was recognised as the Mir Iskusstva art movement which he co-founded in 1898 which was also known as the world art group. Paris is where he became internationally famous for his design Schéhérazade opened in June 1910. Bakst designs where often expressed as been "explosive" through the use of his pure and bright colours thoughout his costuming and set designs he created a moving reaction amoung audiences. He continued to flow into stage design in 1902 doing costumes and sets throughout theatre, he became more specialised in oriental costume designs.

Milena Canonero

Born in Northern Italy, she began her studies in Genoa and finished in London, England, where she studied art and costume design. While there, she met several people from the film industry, including directors Hugh Hudson and Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick offered Canonero her first job as the costume designer for a feature film for his A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971). His trust was justified when she created the witty, shattering, futuristic clothes for his film.

Kubrick's next project was Thackeray's 18th century epic novel Barry Lyndon. Showcasing the lyrical candlelit cinematography of John Alcott and beautiful locations and sets designed by Ken Adam, Canonero collaborated with Ulla-Britt Söderlund to create period costumes that are widely recognized as the penultimate in the state of the art and craft. For this achievement she and Söderlund were honored with Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for 1975.

Hugh Hudson called on Canonero to design CHARIOTS OF FIRE, a modest story of two English athletes set in the early 1920's. Her brilliant costume work helped this film transcend the ordinary. In 1982, she was awarded her second Oscar^® for Costume Design.

She has been nominated six more times for an Academy Award. Each film carries Canonero's inimitable signature, inventive artistry, sharp intelligence and an unwillingness to settle for less than perfection on every level. Her costume designs for Francis Ford Coppola's THE COTTON CLUB (1984) and Sydney Pollack's OUT OF AFRICA (1985) inspired enduring world fashion trends. Canonero bravely and effectively used wild primary comic strip color to pop Warren Beatty's DICK TRACY (1990) off the screen. And, she displayed her mastery of period and style in Coppola's TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM (1988), Julie Taymor's TITUS (1999), Charles Shyer's THE AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE (2001), and Sofia Coppola's MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006, Academy Award). All these films allowed Canonero to employ her powerful ability to create tremendous style and substance for both leading and supporting characters.

Danny Lane

Danny Lane - 1955 -

American-born Danny Lane emerged and was widley renowned for his often dramtic designs in metal and glass. Lanes work crossed the boundries between fine arts, crafts and design.
His reputation which grew considerably in the 1980's - 1990's, was fully consolidated by a major commission from the Victoria and Albert Museum to install a spectacularly stacked glass balustrade in its new glass gallery on the stairs leading to the mezzanine floor.

Danny Lane is the leader of glass sculpture. From beginnings in the design and manufacture of glass furniture, his expertise in shaping and cutting objects transform the function of the domestic creations.

His work is inspired by using a technique of manipulation of space and light. On a large or small scale, Lane's work redefines architectural space.

Isamu Noguchi

1904 - 1988

Isamu Noguchi was a prominent Japanese American artist and landscape architect whose artistic career spanned six decades, from the 1920's onward. Known for his sculpture and public works, Noguchi also designed stage sets for various Martha Graham productions, and several mass-produced lamps and furniture peices, some of which are still manufactured and sold.

Made from solid hardwood and 19mm tempered glass, this iconic 1948 design by Isamu Noguchi is widely considered to be the perfect combination of sculptural style and practical function. It is perhaps the finest example of the beauty of simplicity.

The Noguchi table conceals nothing. Two simple, smoothly shaped peices interlock to form a tripod.

Noguchi's sculptural idiom gains full expression in this sofa, which clearly distinguishes itself from other designs of the same period. The sofa and ottoman seem almost like a greatly enlarged sculpture of flat, rounded river stones, yet at the same time, their slender organic forms are graceful and vigorous.

David LaChapelle is a photographer and video/commercial/film director who works in the fields of fashion, advertising and fine art photography. He is known for his surreal, unique and often humorous style.

He was born in Connecticut, Noth Caroline in 1968. David at the age of 19 studied at the Art Students League and North Carolina School of Arts. He then went to new ork which was where he met Andy Warhol, who offered David his first professional job as a photographer for Interview.

His photographs show blemishless modles and celebrities covered by heavy make-up and lighting.

He has had photographs in magazines worldwide, such as Arena, The New York Time magazine, Rolling Stones, Vogue, The Face, The London Sunday Times and Vanity Fair.

LaChapelle is also known for his groundbreaking use of computer manipulation, futuristic fashion shoots and for placing Hollywood celebrities from Madona, Uma Thurman, Elton John to Drew Barrymore to the X-files’ David Duchovny in wildly imaginative and often compromising erotically charged sttings.

David LaChapelle is a photographer who tends to create his own visionary world. Rather than reproduce what’s already visible. He has evolved his photography into a idiosyncratic and highly personal combination of reportage and surrealism which can be compared to no other photographer.

Horst's contribution to Fashion Photography has been one of the most influential and long-lasting of the Twentieth Century. Between 1931 and 1991, a career spanning 60 years, Horst became legendary for his images of elegance, style and rarified glamour.

Born in St Petersburg into an aristocratic family, Baron George Hoyningen-Huene became one of the great exponents of fashion photography of the 20's and 30's. Fleeing from the Russian Revolution, he moved first to London and then in 1920 to Paris where he made several contacts with the local art scene. he began to work as a fashion draftsman, publishing his work in the Harper's Bazzar and Fairchild's Magazine. By 1925, he became the chief photographer for the French Vogue. In 1935, he moved to New York and began working almost exclusively for Harper's Bazzaar. In 1943, he published two picture books, Hellas and Egypt and soon thereafter moved to Hollywood where he became active in the motion picture industry photographing celebrities.

Liselotte Watkins, born 1971, attended the Art Institute of Dallas and launched her career as an illustrator in New York. Her unique style garnered immediate attention and she landed the prestigious assignment to illustrate Barney’s make-up advertising every Sunday in The New York Times.

Today Liselotte works with many of the biggest clients. Her editorial clients include The New Yorker, Vogue, Elle, Bon and Tush. Among the the commercial clients, one finds H&M, Miu Miu, NK, Net-a-porter, Vagabond, KappAhl, MAC Cosmetics, Sephora, Anna Sui, and Rodebjer. Liselotte is also a highly sought-after set designer. Among her clients in that field are JC, Volvo, Marabou, NK, Bon, Elle, Rodebjer and TV4 .

Liselotte’s style is unmatchable, stunningly original. At the same time her strength is her never-ending restlessness. She never stays complacent, but ceaselessly refines and transforms her style.

Now she has also started accepting styling and props assignments, and has thereby advanced her visual language.

Liselotte was based in New York for five years, but today she works out of Milan and Stockholm. She has published two books, ”Watkin’s Heroine” and ”Watkin’s Box of Pin-ups”, which will soon be followed by ”Watkin’s No 1”.

THE RiCHARD AVEDON - 1923 to 2004

Richard Avedon first began his photography career in 1942 whilst in the merchant marines taking identification photos of the crewmen with a rolleiflex camera that was a present from his father. In 1944 Avedon returned to be enlisted as a photographer in a department store. He was, after two years back, discovered by Alex Brodovitch, the art director at Harpers Bazaar fashion magazine. At this time he was also producing work for Vouge, Look and numerous other fashion magazines. Richard did not like the conventional shooting methods of fashion photography, he preferred to catch models emotions, a perspective of them smiling, laughing and in action. This gave his photography an individual accent amongst the fashion world.

As Richard's notoriety grew he was given the chance to photograph many celebrities to give his personal edge on their look and view. This boosted his fame and also gave him a greater grip on the fashion photography world. In 1966 Richard Avedon left Harpers Bazaar to become a staff photographer for Vogue. He soon became the lead photographer at Vogue magazine and created most the covers for Vogue from 1973 to 1988.

Avedon also worked on numerous other personal and professional work for example photography of mental ward patients, the civil rights movement, protestors of the vietnam war and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He has achieved very high status amongst the entire photography world community and has received many awards for his photography and life works in the field of photography.

He died in 2004 whilst working on a project On Democracy for the New Yorker, leading up to the 2004 elections. October 1.

He has started using a computer for his illustrations apparently to help him fiddle with colour details and is still involved with the fashion industry and such.
