                                     The History Of Computers.



1939-David Packard & Bill Hewlett founded the Hp company.


1944-Harvard Mark-1 is completed.(room sized relay-based calculator) Conceived by Howard Aiken, and designed and built by IBM.








1946-ENIAC(machine built by John Mauchly and J.Presper Eckert)
This calculator was improved by 1000 times by the speed of its contemporaries.
Programmed-plug board and switches
Speed- 5000 operations per secound
Input/Output-Cards, lights, switches,plugs
Floor Space-1000 square feet!
1947- 'The Williams Tube'-Random access memory was invented. This painted dots and dashes
of phosphorescent electrical charge on the screen, representing ones and zeros.


1956- TX-O (the first general purpose, programmable computer)





1960- PDP-1 sold for $120 000. One of 50 built. This computer
had the first computerised video game SPACEWAR!.
1964- First Super-Computer produced. Performed up to 3 million instructions per secound.
Fastest computer (back then) in the world.





1974- ALTO computer designed. First built in mouse. The ALTO stored several files in Windows, offered menu's and icons and could link to a local area network.







1977- The Apple 11 released as a personal computer. Set with colour graphics,printed circuit motherboard, keyboard,casette tape, manual, A/C powerboard and the computer game 'Breakout'.








1982- Commodore releases C64. Sold for $595. Came with 64kb of RAM, featured impressive graphics. Sold more then 22 million units.






1987-IBM introduced its PS/2 machines. 3 1/2 inch floppy disk drive and video graphics array standard for IBM computers.
2008- Newer, Faster Computers were being made from many companies. Through using bulky screens to LCD models. And more and more storage and Memory was built in. There is now thousands of thousands of computer programs and games. This image is the difference between old design and new design. Bulky/Slender. All the same applications built in.
The old computers were slow and had terrible small interfaces. These days the computers are bigger or smaller better and faster. You can also have portable computers such as Laptops.
