 The first drafts of a bicycle were found in 1966 by monks in notes of Leonardo Da Vinci. These notes were create by one of Da Vinci's students in the 1490s.

STEPHEN FARFFLER

Made a tricycle to aid his travel 

 church on a Sunday. He later turned this into a quadricycle.

1817

BARON KARL VON DRAIS


made a wooden bike with no pedals naming it

 

"Draisiennes"- used for enjoyement

 

The design/model was copied cause it wasn't patent throughout all of Germany and France

 

1820

DENIS JOHNSON

improved the bicycle giving it bigger wheels and making it more comfortable calling it the...

KIRKPATRICK MACMILLIAN

created the first modern day bike-making it to travelling 140 miles per hour

 

1861

PIERRI & ERNEST (his son) MICHAUX

invented the pedals of a bicycle.

 

1866

JAMES CARROLL

took out the first patent in in the United States

 

1868-THE FIRST BICYCLE RACE WAS HELD!

 

1870

JAMES STARLEY

designed a new bicycle with one large front wheel and one small back wheel.

 

WEIGHT:

45 pounds

for competition it was 20 pounds 


 

Became most popular in 1882

 

1872 

H.J Lawson

created the first chain for a bicycle and two evenly size wheels

 

This was first manufactured but A.A Pope in 1893

 

1893

The WRIGHT BROTHERS

opened one of the first bike shops (they used there knowledge of bicycles to later produce planes)

 

1909-FIRST 6 DAY BICYCLE RACE HELD IN BERLIN!

 

1930s

Bikes became more streamlined and efficient

 

1970-80s 

Mountain Bikes & BMX Bikes became popular
