Jade - Fashion Design - Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger has influenced both generation X and Y and is applauded for making such an impression on fashion design.

Born on March 24, in 1951, Thomas Jacob Hilfiger grew up in the rural town of Elmira in New York state, but beyond the hussle bussle of the Big city. One of nine children, Tom had always been pretty keen on fashion, and at age 18, when most of his peers were heading off to college, he decided to start working in the retail business.

One thing lead to another, and before long young Tommy Hilfiger had opened his first shop, The People's Place, in upstate New York. Simply put, he would travel into the Big Apple every so often and stock up on jeans and, at the time, the rather happening bell-bottom pants.

Unfortunately, things didn't go to plan and in '76 the The People's Place was shut down due to lack of funds, but at the same time he had 10 speciality shops, catering mostly for the college crowd, so it wasn't a total loss.

A 25-year-old Tommy wasn't put off by the closure of his original boutique, and in fact it seemed to spur him on. As such, he turned to the 'supply' side of the operation, and instead of selling manufactured clothes, he started to make his own.

Despite being offered senior design positions with the likes of Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, Hilfiger decided to go his own way and, at the end of a long hard day, it would be fair to say that he made a good decision.

In 1985, Thomas Hilfiger revealed his first signature line of 'Tommy Hilfiger' clothes. He stated: "I knew exactly what I wanted to do: I wanted to build a brand of clothing around my own attitude and my own lifestyle."Tommy Hilfiger is now a very very well know fashion designer and his work well respected.

By 1990, Hilfiger was making $25 million a year from selling his urban-designer wear. In 1994, Snoop Doggy Dogg wore a Hilfiger shirt on the popular American comedy Saturday Night Live, essentially improving Tommys already impressive street cred.

Today Thomas Jacob Hilfiger's company, Tommy Hilfiger Inc., is a multi-billion dollar business, which has a number of product lines including jeans, fragrances, kids, home, golf, plus mens and womens wear.

Fashion Designer - Perry Ellis

Perry Edwin Ellis was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on March 31940. He later went on to study at New York University, from which he graduated with a master's degree in retailing in 1963. he then worked in the fashion design buisness by simply working in department stores. while working as a merchandiser at the department store Miller & Rhoads, he was co-founder of a Richmond retail shop A Sunny Day. Ellis went on to presented his first women's sportswear line, called Portfolio, in November 1976. Although he could not sketch, he knew exactly how the industry worked and proved a master of innovative ideas who created 'new classics' that American women longed for at the time.By 1982, the company had more than 75 staff. In 1984, Perry Ellis America was created in cooperation with Levi Strauss. In 1985, he revived his lesser-priced Portfolio line. In the early 1980s, wholesale revenues had figured at about $60 million. By 1986 that number had risen to about $250 million.

Perry Ellis died in May 1986.
